Beyond the rainbow: visibility, belonging, and the politics of queer inclusion

Oslo Pride-Pride House 23.06 kl 17.00-18.00 Queer spaces are often imagined as inherently inclusive. Yet visibility, resources, and community remain unevenly distributed. Who gets to be seen, to belong, and to profit from the image of a united queer community? This panel invites an honest conversation about the structural hierarchies shaping queer life in Oslo today. We open with the concept of homonormativity: the way mainstream LGBTQ+ culture has increasingly mirrored dominant social norms rather than challenged them. As the movement has gained broader acceptance, it has tended to centre identities that align with ideas of respectability, professional success, and consumer lifestyles, reproducing hierarchies of whiteness, masculinity, able-bodiedness, gender congruence, and coupledom. In a context where Pride has become a site of commodification and pinkwashing, the most palatable version of queerness gets promoted, while others are marginalised. This creates a paradox when we look at the queer community in Oslo. Highly visible spaces, e.g., gay bars, Pride events, and commercial venues, offer recognition, but visibility and belonging are not the same thing, and it is worth asking what kinds of connection and support these spaces actually sustain, and for whom. Meanwhile, those most excluded from mainstream visibility, e.g., queer migrants, trans and non-binary people, and people of colour, have often had to build the most intentional networks of mutual care and support, though rarely with the resources or recognition they deserve. Using an intersectional lens, the panel explores how race, migration status, class, and gender identity shape access to both visibility and belonging. Our goal is to move beyond celebration and into reflection: what does our community really look like beneath the surface, and what would genuine inclusion require?
